Vinyl production process

From master to finished record

Vinyl is not simply a digital file pressed onto plastic. The audio has to be prepared for a physical format, cut into a master disc, converted into metal stampers, pressed, checked, packed and shipped.

The big picture

The process moves from audio decisions to physical manufacturing. Each stage affects how the final record sounds, tracks and plays back.

Step-by-step process

These are the core stages from the final master to the records arriving with listeners.

Mastering for vinyl

Audio intended for a digital release often does not translate well to vinyl, so a dedicated vinyl master is created to work with the format’s physical limitations.

Sequencing and timing

Engineers plan the tracklist carefully. As the needle moves closer to the centre of the record, high frequencies become harder to reproduce cleanly, increasing the risk of distortion.

Track placement

Softer tracks are usually placed nearer the inner grooves, while louder and more aggressive tracks are placed towards the outside of the record.

Side length

Side lengths are monitored closely. Keeping each side under roughly 18.5 to 20 minutes helps avoid lowering the volume or compromising the low end.

Dynamics

Sudden dramatic level changes can cause the playback needle to jump out of the groove, so dynamics are controlled with care.

Low frequencies

Low frequencies are usually centred to avoid phase problems that can make the groove difficult to cut or track.

High frequencies

Harsh high frequencies are attenuated where necessary to reduce distortion and improve playback reliability.

Assembling the sides

Once the audio is prepared, the mastering engineer sets consistent volume levels across the tracks and exports the music as continuous Side A and Side B files. These are delivered to the cutting engineer alongside a detailed tracklist.

Lacquer cutting

A cutting engineer uses a specialised machine called a lathe to translate the audio into vertical and horizontal cuts. The lathe physically carves the continuous groove into a blank lacquer master disc. This is the first physical version of the record.

Plating, also called electroforming

The delicate lacquer master is sent to a plating facility, where a nickel negative is grown from it. This creates the metal parts needed for manufacturing.

Creating the stampers

The metal parts generated during plating are used to create stampers. These are the metal moulds that press the final groove pattern into the plastic.

Pressing the vinyl

At the pressing plant, PVC pellets or recycled ground-up PVC are run through an extruder to create hot, molten plastic. The paper centre labels are added, and the plastic is sandwiched between the stampers and pressed with steam. Cold water then cools and sets the plastic into a rigid disc. A properly functioning press can make about two records per minute.

Trimming and quality control

Excess vinyl around the edge of the freshly pressed record is trimmed away. Before mass production begins, a small batch of test pressings, often around five copies, is sent to the engineers and artist. These are auditioned to check for defects such as skips, warping or excessive pops, and to confirm that the pressing matches the artist’s creative vision.

Packing and shipping

Once the pressing is approved and the full run is manufactured, the records are packed into their sleeves and jackets, shrink-wrapped, boxed into pallets and shipped out.

Why vinyl needs its own master

A vinyl record is a mechanical playback system. The groove has to carry the music physically, so extreme stereo bass, harsh treble, sudden level changes and over-limited masters can all create problems. A good vinyl master protects the sound while keeping the record playable.

Pre-cut checklist

  • ✓Dedicated vinyl master created rather than reusing the digital master.
  • ✓Side lengths checked, ideally staying under around 18.5 to 20 minutes.
  • ✓Louder tracks placed earlier on each side where possible.
  • ✓Low frequencies centred and phase issues controlled.
  • ✓Test pressings reviewed before approving the full run.
